[MM] Questions about the basics

I'm very new to hacking N64 games, the only rom-hacks I have any experience with are SNES roms, primarily focusing on vanilla content and using simple tools such as Lunar Magic for Mario World and I'm trying to expand my reach to a greater variety of games and hope to not only gain more knowledge on rom-hacking but also even knowledge on how games work in general. Now, I'm trying to find a way to simply modify the dungeons of Majora's Mask in a similar manor to Ocarina of Time's Master Quest. Changing enemy placement or types, creating hidden switches, anything along those lines. However, I have to start from square one. Finding the right software. Everywhere I look it seems to point me in two directions: SayakaGL and Utility of Time.

I've heard the newer version of Utility of Time isn't as good as "the old version" (0.90) as such I have the latter, and I've also heard that SayakaGL is an overall better program than UoT and so I downloaded the only version I could find: 0.1.1 . But each program has its own set of questions on just how to get the thing started.

For UoT, I'm a bit confused on what exactly I'm supposed to do to even load the ROM. Whenever I hit "Open" it asks for .zobj, .zmap, and .zdata files rather than the actual ROM file .z64. I've assumed this means I have to use the extraction tool in order to load specific parts of the ROM but that only lead to more questions and it was a bit overwhelming. Right away there's the issue that nothing has any words or even abbreviations for their names unlike when I extract from the OoT ROM in which while it takes some figuring out, it is much easier to put together what is what. Instead, I simply get strange sequences of numbers and letters which I can only assume are hexidemical values. For example, 02A2E000 - 02A3A1E0.zmap which seems to open the Ikana graveyard and then asks me to open the corresponding scene file which after a little bit of playing around I found to be 02A1F000 - 02A2D1D0.zscene. But looking at the huge list of possible zmap and zscene files, there's A LOT of possible combinations and I don't want to sit there and try to find each one by trial and error. Is there any way for me to either read what these codes are referring to or perhaps simplify the names in the same way as Ocarina of Time's?

As for SayakaGL, I can load the ROM just fine and I seem to be able to load each scene and room very well. However, I run into a completely different problem. I can't save! Every time I load the ROM it gives me a warning saying "Saving currently not supported for compressed ROMs!" What does this mean? I've tried looking all over the internet on ways to "decompress" N64 ROMs but all I can find are 7Zip and Winrar tutorials which are completely unrelated. I know it's possible to decompress the ROM in some way as the Ocarina of Time ROM works just fine. How exactly do I fix this problem with the Majora's Mask ROM?

As a side note, I know that my Ocarina of Time Debug rom isn't vanilla. For some reason, the download link gave me a version that was pre-patched with the "Zelda's Birthday" mod. However I still have access to all the debug features which is pretty weird but it does show that it is possible to "decompress" an N64 ROM. I just need to figure out how so I can actually start learning to use these tools. Thanks ahead of time for any help!

If you're new to this, start working with OoT.

Well I have played around with Ocarina of Time a long time ago, I believe what made me put down hacking N64 roms was I had some problem with the ROM suddenly becoming unplayable. Is there any specific reason I should just stick to OoT other than the simple map and scene name problems? I'm not planning on adding anything big and complicated like completely custom enemies, models and music. I'm simply planning on modifying the existing maps to make them new.

Edit: Alright, well I fixed that proplem fairly simply. I just used SayakaGL to look at the map and scene info and use UoT to do the editing. Now for another problem, I'm constantly getting an error message saying

Quote:

Error in grabbing actors

Debug Info: Index was out of range. Must be non-negative and less than the size of the collection.
Parameter name: Index

I can't even begin to imagine what this is supposed to mean but it seems like the majority of the actors are completely missing. From what I can tell this only seems to occur whenever I try to load specific maps in Majora's Mask but it doesn't seem to happen in Ocarina of Time at all. Could anyone possibly have an idea on how to solve this issue?
