Hey Guys; Introduction

Hey all, my friends call me Trilly, so feel free to do so also. The reason I'm here though is because over the past maybe year or two, I've been watching a lot of Zelda hacking going on, and I'm a huge fan of Zelda (favorite being Majora's Mask). Anyways, when I saw the hacking going on, specifically the four swords multiplayer OoT one, I was absolutely appalled. So after growing tired of watching and being disappointed by canceled projects, I decided I'd like to join the fray. However, I know absolutely NOTHING about modding or coding, but I'm more than eager and patient enough to learn. So I'm not asking for any of you guys to teach me, but if any of you could point me in the direction I need to go to learn the fundamentals and skills I need to begin, I would be more than grateful. I hope to someday create an OoT Mod with 2-player co-op and all new dungeons, just need to know where to start first. I look forward to being an active member of this community, and I thank you all in advance!! :D

Sounds interesting. You may want to look at spinouts asm source code for the 4 player. Maybe you can cut it down to two links. Cendamos was doing a splitscreen one but idk what happened to it. You wont have z targeting though :/ anyways, welcome and enjoy your stay!

Thanks alot, hopefully I could learn enough to implement my own split-screen which would allow Z-targeting for both Links, but I don't wanna get too ahead of myself. If you could tell me though, what basic skills do I need to begin modding? Which coding languages should I learn to begin hacking the N64 Zeldas?

You need to know MIPS assembly. C is a good language to learn. You should learn your way around the Debug ROM and various modding tools (HT, Etc). It will take time, but you can do amazing things with it

Okay, thanks a lot man. I don't expect to learn over night, but I'll definitely be putting a lot of time into it. Patience is a virtue right? lol

Will do, last question, should I learn C first, or the Mips ASM? and also, I see there are like different versions of MIPS, which would be useful to me?

The n64 had a MIPS R4300i or somesuch chip. So logically, that one would be good. As far as C code, im not sure. I dont know much ASM tbh.

EDIT: Heres a possibly helpful link

Welcome to the forums! I recommend you start with simple things like a Rice texture pack or a custom map. but if you are up to it, I have a tutorial here for importing custom models that I hope to update soon so that if I made any mistakes, nobody else will make them.

A custom map sounds much more appealing, and what is a rice texture pack?
