AriaHiro - Hopefully this forum will be able to capture a smidge of the magic in IRCs and make it a bit permanent. Ganondork - I am waiting for there to be an embeddable Discord client for websites, then I will add that to this site. Thorkill - Promotional apparel is a neat idea. I like that. Also, I do think it'd be a cool idea to have some sort of "Asset Repository" for people to use. Similar to an Asset Store, but everything is free. That's actually a really good idea. I'll have to look into implementing that. |

As much as projects tend to be a good method of bringing in traffic (and I do agree that is something that will be very beneficial towards the site), we should remember not to build a community on idolization. Because if all comes falling down, it's usually the final nail in the coffin in terms of people sticking around. Then we start over, again and again. A strong foundation is needed, one that is active, thriving and inviting. And as Killgore52 has stated, our community needs to be more welcoming. I also think that subforums such as the Zelda Modding "Questions" subforum should have certain pinned topics like a "Simple Question & Answer" topic, where users should post basic questions that needn't warrant their own topics, reducing the amount of "spam topics," thus further reducing the general negative vibe newcomers get. Then questions that users believe should have a dedicated topic to can post and it could go through an approval process, where if it isn't deemed justified to have its own topic, be moved to the Simple Q&A. This is just an example anyway, and I think it would make the community a little more organized and streamlined. There could also be a dedicated subforum/topic for the "Asset Repository," possibly with format/uploading guidelines, again just a suggestion though. I also believe the modding scene is dead just simply because easy to understand information is not readily available to people foreign to this particular niche. There really just needs to be a place dedicated to at least semi-professional written tutorials dedicated to breaking down a lot of the basics and concepts, to building the reader's knowledge and understanding further with step by step tutorials spanning a variety of areas of modding. Said tutorials should include images, and refer to the wiki or have some form of integration in the web page, alongside optional videos for demonstration for those who would learn easier that way. Simple guides such as outlining programs commonly used and how to operate them, breaking down an understanding of basic things like hex, ROM/RAM, etc.; to things like creating models and other more "creative" areas of modding; to even further advanced topics like MIPS and microcode, etc. This should be readily available and also easily accessible, to both new and old users. I think it could very well boost interest and activity in the community for sure. However these are just my own personal opinions based on what I've seen with the various communities we've gone through. Hopefully we can stabilize an active community. Also I really like the site's change of theme, a lot nicer and cleaner looking IMO. Perhaps a lighter gray variant of the theme would compliment it well. :b |

I was curious if someone wanted a light theme. I'll have to go through and create one (again). That will have to be after I really spend some time getting the current theme fixed. I recently got a better headset, so I should be able to record some new videos (and replace my old ones) going over a lot of topics on Zelda modding. The forums do need to be cleaned up, but it's just a matter of me having enough time to sift through everything. I might be able to start that tomorrow. As far as the proposed "Asset Repository," I am considering creating a new webpage for it, with submissions being sent through me to be approved (for quality, malware checks, etc) just to prevent possible abuse. Thanks for all your suggestions Delirium! Also, Zamboni, glad to see you lose the lurker tag. |

The community needs more people that actually want to learn how to hack proper, rather than all this "blind leading the blind" shit. |

I could be totally wrong, but I seem to recall hearing once that one Smash Bros. forum had a sort of "backroom" forum (That's the best way I can explain it anyway), which was sort of like a separate forum and page entirely, but branched from the same site. The only people who could access it were those who were very skilled and active in the community. I don't think it's a bad idea to think about making one of these ourselves. It's not really about segregating any members or anything, but I imagine it would help keep goals unanimous and focused. If a goal to do something was set there, and it was in the community's best interest to help push it along, then activities or content could be created and coordinated there, so there was always progress to speak of. In a way, the members that were there could sort of be leaders of the site. deciding where we go and what's next. As where the Admins/Mods just continue to manage the site, like Janitors/Police, not that one cannot be both a moderator AND a "leader". The only other thing is that projects and tools need to be more readily available for those who are interested. The "Downloads" page is a mess, and frankly, I forgot it was there. I think both "Mods" and "Tools" should get their own page up there in the navigation bar. As for the "Mods" page, don't go out of your way to include very negatively-received/incomplete mods. Include the good stuff, and the finished stuff, and personally I would organize it by reception and size, no hard feelings to anyone, but it would be beneficial to list the site's best work at the top. It's up to you if you want to include unfinished things, but personally I wouldn't unless they contain some pretty neat feats, especially if the mod is now inactive. The only other thing is that it might be helpful to give each mod their own page, or perhaps a tab that opens sort of like spoiler tabs. There you could include the title, author(s), perhaps the release date, and an honest description. I do feel that it's important to be honest, and write your own description. Don't keep in the claim "It's like a whole new game", if it's 99% OoT. As for the "Tools" page, it would be rather simple. Just come up with categories, and try and grab as many working tools as you can. Even the small stuff, like "Fairy Color Changer". Sort it practically, maybe "Aesthetics" would make a good category. Maybe "Mechanics" would also, you get the gist. This is particularly important for anyone who's interested in making a new mod and wants to take it seriously, a simple stroll through this page may give them ideas about how much they can do right off the bat, and give them new ideas about stuff they hadn't thought about before. You may want to give some of these descriptions too. Complex multi-tools like "Hylian Toolbox" isn't really self-explanatory. Which also makes me thing "Multi-Tool" might make for another good category, or just a sub-title you may want to give the tool. Edited by GodsTurf, Mar 6 2017, 03:42 AM.

Hey, nice to see your back man. Anyway I feel like that the community is too exclusive, as if you only can mod Zelda64 and that is the problem. It should include other Zelda games, even Nintendo or any games. Maybe the approach of the website should be broader to games like Maco tried to be, although it was at the end of its life. This worked in some instances such as glitchkill and tcrf but it needs to be maintained. And another reason the Zelda64 modding community really thrived was due to tools being developed for it. If we had real tools and more modders for Wind Waker or Twilight Princess maybe the community will thrive. I mean a lot of Zelda mods get moved to either a custom or open sourced engine. Anyway my main point is that the site should be broader instead of smaller. Sorry for double post. But to further add to my statement, I feel that the site should also be a bit more welcoming. The ZSO theme feels more user friendly then the dark theme, even if the dark theme is better aesthetically in my opinion. Possibly something such as a music player at the top with various OST from Zelda/Nintendo games, or even legendary games. Have a custom cursor and cool post ranks instead of just member and advanced members. Maybe even a front page blog. Anyway my main point is that the community and site should look and be more user friendly. Edited by Mooliecool, Mar 6 2017, 08:26 AM.

Godsturf, I don't know how I feel about an exclusive forum for advanced gurus, simply because that would make the normal members feel not that great. I may be able to have a forum section where all members can read it, but only advanced gurus could post. That would also stave the flood of "PROGRESS!!?!?111" threads. I agree, the downloads page is a mess. Some of the links are dead. It's really just a matter of me sitting down and organizing/going through the page. I do agree that the pages should be split up. Mooliecool, the problem is that the website is called Zelda64, which is geared towards (obviously) the N64 Zelda games. Trying to be all inclusive when the N64 Zelda games have the most tools and documentation seems a bit counterintuitive. As far as the sites physical design itself, that is currently my top priority. A bad UI makes me leave websites, so I really want to modernize and correct the current UI. The problem with the Zso theme is that it isn't modern. It is ripped straight out of the 90s, and that's usually a put off to a lot of web users (myself included). I kept it on to appease people who've been on the scene since ZSO was active. As far as a music player - no. I already tried that and users said it was annoying. Legendary games, not sure what you mean there. Custom cursor - at the end of the day, a custom cursor really doesn't matter. It will make navigating the site ever so slightly slower, and then adding a ton of stuff on top won't help that issue. Plus mobile users might have issues with it. Post ranks - will do. Been wanting to, just haven't had the time. A front page blog - I had considered it, but I think the portal is best if you are looking for a short summary. EDIT: I'll add in the player for a few days and see feedback on it. Anyway it was pretty much my 2 cents. Anyway maybe make the player paused, but plays when the user pushes play, to give the site a bit more life. But I'm exited to see what the new UI looks like . Anyway thanks for being back
